A serious fire broke out in the Village of Prairie du Sac in August 1882 (this was believed to be the Obrecht Lumber Company, which was located at Fifth Street and Broadway Street). Following the fire the Village Board adopted a resolution, which thanked the C.M. & St. P.R.R. Company for hauling Mazomanie's fire engine to the scene of the fire. There was a vote to pay $6.00 each to Henry Lukens and Frank Burges for the use of their teams in the conveying Sauk City's fire equipment from Sauk City to Prairie du Sac and to pay $50.00 each to the fire companies of Mazomanie and Sauk City.
This disastrous fire prompted the Village Board to purchase a fire engine for $625.00 in 1893 which was stored in a building owned by W.C. Cook. _ |
| March 4, 1893, a committee was appointed consisting of C.J. Meyer, V. Accola and Christ Buehler to solicit names and call a meeting to organize a fire company. During this same meeting the purchase of a 200-ft. fire hose was authorized costing $110.00.
June 20, 1893 the Board purchased a fire bell form John Keller for the amount of $54.00 and voted to place a lamp in the front of the fire engine house. Geo. Baldwin was paid $34.77 for the bell tower and for fixing the engine house.

January 6, 1900 the Street Committee was instructed to visit the engine house and inspect and to look into the question of raising the salary for lighting the lamp at the engine house. At the next meeting the salary was raised from $6.00 to $8.00 per year. It was also decided to have the engine hose covered with sheet iron and the contract would be given to M.C. Moore, for the amount of $135.00.

June 16, 1904 Chas. Stoddard was awarded the contract to build a bell tower and to furnish the bell and rope for $100.00." "Otto Kroll painted the tower for the amount of $2.00. When the fire bell rang, it was a race to get your team to the fire engine house first, because the first to get hitched to the fire engine was paid a sum of money to be the first at the scene of the fire.

At the annual meeting held April 3, 1923, the Village Board approved a $500.00 appropriation for the purpose of purchasing a Chemical Fire Engine and other equipment which was needed for the protection against fire loss. A Fire truck was purchased for the amount of $240.00.
January 12, 1932 the Board voted to purchase a fire truck and install an electric connection between the telephone office and the siren along with a telephone which was installed in the outer hall of the library building. March 8, 1931 it was voted to accept the bid for a fire truck from Peter Kirsch and Co. for a fire engine to be mounted on a Ford truck for the amount of $2,300.00.

_
A list was presented to the Board to organize a new fire company. The Board confirmed the new members on March 31, 1932. As a result of the new fire fighting equipment and the new members appointed to the fire company, the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau place the Fire Company in Class 7 rating status.
_ |
| The class rating status was increased in 1934 to Class 6.
Today due to the continual training, education, equipment updates and the dedication of over 30 volunteer fire fighters the Prairie du Sac Fire Department has achieved a Class 3 Rating. The success and level of protection achieved by the Fire Department is due to the support of the residents of Prairie du Sac.
